Swimmers of the Month March 2024
This is a super short month, but one in which many things happened. In only two weeks we had both a regional meet and ManSask Provincials, so many races were swum. Spring Break will be a much needed rest.
A big congratulations to our two developmental Swimmers of the Month; in a surprise move the DeLima sisters cornered the market on excellence this month! Younger sister Qier (Class 1) has suddenly begun to make amazing progress, thanks to her perfect attendance, and older sister Quila (Class1.5) successfully competed in her very first regional swim meet here in Rupert. Well done, girls.
Nevan Gamble is our Class 2 winner for March. He only joined the Rapids in October, at rather a little older than the average swimmer begins with the club, but his quiet determination is sure paying off. He took a whopping 26 seconds off his 50 free at his second ever swim meet (he was brave enough to swim at his very first meet only weeks after joining the club)! Nevan is a great role model, embodying our belief that swimming is for everyone; if you put in the effort day after day you master the skills, but more importantly you must enjoy doing your sport (and just look at that smile).
Class 3 Bethany Sumanik is another one of our “rather a little older” swimmers who joined the club last season. She’s also a great role model; willing to put herself out there and work hard, and always with a smile not a complaint. Betty is a great breaststroker, but at the March meet she chose to challenge herself and swim some different events, including annihilating her 200 IM time and braving the 100 Fly for the first time. (ps that's Bethany, really it is hee hee)
Class 456 aka Senior Swimmers; Peter Joubert is a quiet kind of guy who always shows up, always works hard, always gets the job done. He has a low key leadership style, but somehow always seems to be where he’s supposed to be. Peter has had a pretty good month for a senior swimmer. Best times get harder and harder to come by the longer you swim, but Peter continues to shave off the seconds so even though we changed the rules for our Rupert March meet so points were scored not for coming in first but for most time off, he STILL ended up at the top of the podium! And as a crowning achievement for the month he made it onto the Rapids Top 5 Ever list for his 1500 Free.
Big congratulations to all our winners, and a reminder that we have 3 more months left in the season, so if you work hard and stay focused, next time This Could Be You.
